Background
Horrocks led design efforts for the Spaghetti Bowl Xpress (SBX) interchange, connecting I-80 and I-580 near Reno, Nevada. With this interchange already being the busiest in northern Nevada, steady population growth increases necessitated a renovation to accommodate new growth.
Project Details
This Design-Build (DB) project reconstructed I-580 southbound (SB) from I-80 to Villanova Drive. Improvements included widening, reconstruction, and the addition of new lanes to increase capacity and enhance operations and safety. The 2nd Street and Mill Street interchanges on I-580 were reconfigured and reconstructed to improve access to the local roadway network. The eastbound (EB) and westbound (WB) I-80 to SB I-580 SB system interchange ramps were realigned and reconstructed. The original three I-580 northbound (NB) I-580 inside lanes were also reconstructed using concrete pavement.
Outcomes
Horrocks provided the Nevada Department of Transportation with an accelerated design and construction schedule that quickly delivered improvements to this very busy and congested interchange. The redesign preserved recent improvements on NB and SB I-580 and increased spacing between enhanced safety and alleviated traffic congestion and delays in this critical northern Nevada juncture.
