Alpine and Highland Active Transportation Planning
Client:
Alpine City; Highland City
Completed:
2023
Location:
Highland, Utah
Background
Horrocks developed a multijurisdictional active transportation plan for the cities of Alpine and Highland, Utah. These municipalities, located at the mouth of American Fork Canyon, boast beautiful landscapes offering a multitude of recreational activity that, if thoughtfully integrated, could greatly enhance infrastructure, resources, and connectivity.
Project Details
The aim of this project was to develop a regional, nonmotorized backbone network that connected the two cities to trailheads, schools, parks, retail centers, and other community destinations. The team worked to develop high-comfort bicycle and trail standards and applied those typologies to each roadway based on local corridor context. In addition to defining the backbone and local networks, Horrocks developed a phased approach for implementation, preliminary cost estimates for construction, and a maintenance plan for long-term success.
Outcomes
Following a laborious process of data collection, public engagement, cross section development, active transportation facility reviews, and planning-level cost forecasting, Horrocks delivered a comprehensive active transportation plan for Alpine City and Highland City, accompanied by an implementation plan to help each city execute those plans.
